Abhishek Sharma Reveals How He Countered West Indies’ Bowling Strategy in Third ODI
Abhishek Sharma reveals how he countered West Indies’ bowling plans with a 30-ball 69 in the third ODI. Find out how India secured a 2-1 series lead and why the team remained cautious despite taking wickets.
West Indies introduced off-spinner Roston Chase in the opening over and deployed more fielders on the off side. This forced Abhishek to explore alternative scoring options. He explained that maximising runs during the powerplay is always his objective, adding that mental preparation plays an equally important role in achieving that goal.
Asked about his decision to continue playing shots on the off side despite the field placement, Abhishek said he would not claim that the West Indies had deliberately adopted the approach specifically for him, but it was clear that they had a plan against him. He said he respected the situation during the first over, assessed the conditions and then began taking on the bowling.
Abhishek also highlighted the importance of preparation before a match. He said he carefully considers which strategies bowlers are likely to use against him and how he can execute his own plans in response. Understanding the opposition’s approach and preparing accordingly are essential parts of his game, he indicated.
The Indian batter also cautioned against underestimating West Indies, describing the team as dangerous opponents who cannot be taken lightly at any stage of a match. He pointed to the second match in Ranchi as a clear example of why a contest cannot be considered under control prematurely.
According to Abhishek, the Indian team remained alert even as West Indies continued losing wickets. The players repeatedly reminded one another that the opposition would keep attacking regardless of the situation. India were determined not to give West Indies even a single opportunity to stage a comeback.
Abhishek, however, expressed surprise at the aggressive batting displayed by Shamar Springer during the final stages of the innings. His remarks underlined the need for India to remain focused against a West Indies side capable of mounting an attacking challenge even when under pressure.
